we will bargain together

21 June 2022

Dear members,

Over the past few days, Sydney Trains and NSW Trains have been deploying contract cleaners across the network in an attempt to strike break the impact of the Hazardous Waste Ban put in place by Cleaners and Station Staff.

Rather than sit down and negotiate with our members, as usual, management have decided to simply throw money to private contracting companies.

We are now calling on all members to support the industrial action being taken by our Cleaners and Station Staff. We continue to have a ban on working with contractors, and we need to ramp up enforcement of this ban to stop this behaviour by management. You can show support by taking these simple steps.

1. If a contractor attempts to board a train you are working, you have the right to cease performing your duties while they are present and until they leave.

2. At turnaround locations, if contractors are present and ask for the doors to be opened to allow them to board, you have the right to refuse to allow them on.

3. If your train has been cleaned overnight by contractors, you have the right to not bring it into service, as this would constitute working with that contractor to prepare the train for service.

4. The exception to the above is COVID cleaning performed while the train is in service.

If management questions what you are doing, or why you are doing it, simply tell them that you are following the Unions protected industrial action ban on working with contractors.

Remember, under the Fair Work Act 2009, you cannot face any consequences for participating in protected industrial action. If you are subject to any bad behaviour by management, contact your delegate immediately and the issue will be escalated.

As this fight continues, we will see management and the NSW Government trying to divide us and break us. Now more than ever it is vitally important to remain unified.

In Unity,
