we will bargain together

24 June 2022

Dear members,

Following the cancelled meeting this morning, and after further notified action and media attention today, we were called to a late night meeting with Senior Transport Officials, the Transport Minister, David Elliot, and Employee Relations Minister, Damien Tudehope.

In the hastily organised meeting with the Combined Rail Unions, the NSW Government said that ERC had agreed to a large number of the 84 claims that were supported by Transport for NSW, but that the alterations to ensure the safety of the New InterCity Fleet would not be agreed to.

Instead, the government put forward a bribe for Drivers and Guards who would operate the NIF – a monetary payment only to be paid to members if there is agreement to operating the NIF without any changes to ensure the safety of workers and the community. Essentially what the Government is asking us to do is sell out the safety of those who rely on us as a vital public service.

Something we are not willing to do.

The Government also refused our claim for One Agreement meaning that they wish to keep us separate in two separate agreements.

The Government also put on the table a wage offer in line with its “wages cap”. More details about this will come to light shortly, but we all know from the media coverage over the last few months that what the Government is offering certainly doesn’t keep up with the rising cost of living.

We have asked the Government to provide its offer in writing so that Delegates can consider it. It’s always up to the membership to call the shots, but if the government thinks Rail Workers will simply throw safety to the wind for a few bucks, they’re going to be bitterly disappointed. This has always been about safety for us. The New Intercity Fleet operating model is unsafe in its current form. It puts commuters (especially children) and workers’ safety at risk.

An urgent meeting of your EA delegates was held tonight to discuss next steps. It was unanimous that all actions need to remain on foot until further notice and escalate as required to force the Government’s hand.

All actions to continue as planned – all protected industrial currently underway and planned for next week will continue as usual.

As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your local delegate or your organiser.
