Industrial Action for cleaners commences 0001hrs THURSDAY
15 June 2022
Due to the rejection by management of some of our key claims, RTBU Fleet and Station Cleaners are taking protected industrial action again this week.
While significant headway has been made in negotiations regarding claims for cleaners and other RTBU members, Sydney Trains and NSW Trains (supported by the NSW Government) are stalling again.
Cleaners aren’t asking for the moon. Our members are asking for 3 separate allowances (graffiti, respirator, and hazardous waste) to be enshrined in our EA and paid at an appropriate rate for the work involved.
We have now been told that the work we do isn’t important enough to justify this meagre increase to our wages.
The offer they have come back with is 74 cents an hour, per allowance, to be claimed only when we can prove the circumstances that attract the allowance has occurred. Additionally, they’re saying that station cleaners would not be eligible for these allowances.
It is a kick in the guts for us to be offered an occasional 74 cents an hour while the Premier spends $500 million on yet another bullet train announcement (we’ll believe it when we see it). While the New Intercity Fleet costs an estimated $30 million a month sitting in the sheds because the NSW Government won’t make easy, reasonable safety adjustments – we are told our work isn’t worth the couple of dollars we are asking for.
It is now vitally important that all RTBU cleaners show Sydney Trains, NSW Trains and the NSW Government the impact of the work we do.
As such, upcoming actions for cleaners are as below:
Commencing 16th June
Indefinite ban on cleaning hazardous waste, starting 0001hrs 16th June
Commencing 22nd June
Cleaners indefinitely refusing to clean windows or mop. Action commences: 0001hrs on 22 June 2022
Turnaround Cleaners and Station Cleaners only cleaning hard rubbish and nothing else. Action commences: 0001hrs on 22 June 2022 continuing indefinitely
We need to stand united and hold strong. We won’t accept any EA that fails to acknowledge the contribution of cleaners on the network.
Actions will escalate if necessary.
If you have any questions please contact your local delegate or organiser.
