we will bargain together

23 September 2021

Dear Members,

On Saturday 25 September 2021, members at Sydney Trains and NSW Trains will be creating chaos across the network.

Members will be taking five different actions to express their sheer frustration with the continued disrespect shown to you and your EA delegates. For the past three months, Sydney Trains and NSW Trains have repeatedly refused to meet with your combined delegates to hear your log of claims.

In the most recent show of disrespect, on Tuesday afternoon Sydney Trains cancelled a scheduled bargaining meeting with less than 24 hours’ notice.

A brief history of disrespect by Sydney Trains and NSW Trains:

  1. Offered a 0.3% pay rise to roll over the agreement for 6 months, 90% of you voted this offer down.
  2. After that, management refused to bargain at all, forcing members to vote in a majority support determination to drag Sydney and NSW Trains to the table.
  3. Management refused to meet with your combined delegates to hear your log of claims (they still haven’t sat down to hear what you want).
  4. Spent obscene amounts of money on lawyers to oppose your right to vote on whether you want to take industrial action.
  5. Did not show up to a meeting of all the combined unions called well in advance.

On Saturday, members from across our Union will be taking coordinated action to send a clear message to management that this sort of behaviour is just not good enough.

The actions are:

  • Station Staff will perform duties sitting down
  • Drivers will not operate trains at speeds greater than 60kph
  • Train Crew will operate trains to stop at every station
  • Drivers will blow their whistle before departing every station
  • There will be a ban on the issuing of transpositions.

These actions will commence at 0001hrs on Saturday morning and continue for 24 hours.

We are already seeing signs that our industrial action is working. On Saturday, NSW Trains has already cancelled several regional trains, and have limited Intercity Trains to only operating in certain areas. They are truly bracing for a chaotic Saturday!

Following this on Tuesday morning, all members will walk off the job at 9am. During the strike, we’ll be conducting a digital picket line. So, whether you’re at work, at home, or anywhere else, you’ll be able to dial in and participate in the stop work meeting.

Together we will show Sydney Trains, NSW Trains, TfNSW and the NSW Government that we mean business and we’re here to fight for better pay and conditions, and the respect that we all deserve.

What does respect mean to you?

Our digital picket line and our month of action have all been because we aren’t getting the respect we deserve from management. Even though we have different jobs, we all deserve to be treated with respect. So what does that mean?

Respect means management don’t cancel bargaining meetings.

Respect means more than a 0.3% pay rise.

Respect means safe workplaces.

Respect means you are consulted on changes to your job BEFORE they happen.

What does respect mean to you? We want to hear from you.

Get ready for our digital picket line by filling out our survey and planning your workplace’s dial in. Talk to your delegate or organiser and see you there.

In unity,

RTBU NSW
